Encephalopathy is a difficult term because it can be used to denote either a disease or finding (i.e., an observable sign in a person). When referring to a finding, encephalopathy refers to permanent (or degenerative) brain injury, or a reversible one. It can be due to direct injury to the brain, or illness remote from the brain.

Pseudolaminar necrosis - (uncontrolled) cell death in the cerebral cortex in a band-like pattern, with a relative preservation of cells immediately adjacent to the meninges. Notes: Varies/no/unlikely: Anoxic encephalopathy is brain damage due to a localized or generalized lack of oxygen. It can vary from unnoticed to actual brain death, with every lev Delayed anoxic encephalopathy, a rare yet clinically and pathologically well-delineated complication ofhypoxiawith unknownpathogenesis, is described in a 40-year-old manfollowing a drug over-dose. The abnormality may be transient, recurrent, or permanent. There are numerous types of encephalopathy and brain disorders with a variety of different etiologies. Background: Anoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (AIE) affects the gray matter more than the white matter. Recent animal experiments suggest that the white matter is more sensitive to ischemia than previously thought. The authors describe the MRI findings in seven patients with AIE who demonstrate early preferential involvement of the white matter.
